The procedure itself is no more painful than having a filling placed, especially after a local anesthetic is placed around the tooth. For starters, Drs Gary Warner, Gillian Robinson-Warner & Shana Dicks will drill down into the tooth to create an opening into the canal. The doctor will then be able to remove infected tissue and clean the canal. After the infection has been removed, the space is filled with a sealant called gutta-percha to keep out contaminants such as saliva and food. Lastly, the tooth will be restored with a crown to protect it.
A tooth’s nerve can become irritated, inflamed, and infected due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures on a tooth, and/or large fillings, a crack or chip in the tooth, or trauma to the face. If you experience severe toothache pain upon chewing or application of pressure, prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold temperatures, discoloration of the tooth, and/or swelling or tenderness in the nearby gums, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options.
